LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATION

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to enroll in this program?
Students must be in academic good standing in their respective college to participate in the program.  Otherwise, any University of Minnesota--whether they are full-time or part-time, undergraduate or graduate level--is welcome to participate!

How long does it take to finish the program?
This will vary greatly depending on the student.  Highly ambitious participants may finish the program in a semester.  However, the program is designed for students to participate as they are available.  Essentially, a student could participate during his or her entire matriculation, if necessary.

How do students enroll in this program?
Students can simply show up at one of the scheduled workshops to register, or they can register ahead of time by visiting the Office for Student Engagement and Leadership in 209 Appleby Hall or by visiting www.lead.umn.edu/certification.

What are the requirements for students to complete the program?
The requirements for the Certification Program can be seen here.

What is the cost of this program?
Students pay nothing to participate in the overall program.  However, individual workshops may have a small charge associated with it depending on the topic.  For example, a workshop about the StrengthsQuest assessment tool may ask students to pay a small fee to take the assessment prior to the workshop.  However, no student will ever be turned away from a workshop they are interested in because of inability to pay.

Do students need to sign up for the workshops they wish to attend?
Due to high demand for workshops, students are required to register for workshops they wish to attend.

How do I remove myself from workshops I have registered for?
It is easy to remove yourself from a workshop. Send an e-mail to leader@umn.edu with your name and the title and date of the worskhop you wish to be removed from.

Who are the workshop presenters?
The presenters represent a wide variety of University staff and faculty, as well as members of the Twin Cities community.

What are some examples of workshop topics?
There are many workshops offered, with new ones starting every semester.

Social Change Model of Leadership Development
The Dynamics of Power and Influence
Credibility or: Why Won't Anyone Listen to Me!
Relationship Building
Peer or Leader? Determining Which Comes First

There is also a full list of the workshops we offer this year.

What are reflections?
In addition to fifteen workshops, participants must complete three reflections, one after every 5 workshops completed. After the participant completes their 5th workshop, an e-mail will be sent with details about how to complete the reflection. There may be a variety of different options for reflection: writing a short paper or participating in a group discussion, for example. If you believe you have completed five workshops and have not received an e-mail about completing a reflection, please let us know.

I attended the Social Justice Leadership Retreat. How do I get workshop credits for that?
Please e-mail us at
leader@umn.edu and let us know the retreat you went on and what date you went. We will need to verify your attendence with Housing and Residential Life, and then we will get back to you. Please allow a few weeks for this process to take place. You will receive credit for 1 Leadership Basics themed workshop, 1 Diversity themed workshop, and 1 elective workshop for attending the retreat.

Do I have to finish the three reqiured basic workshops before attending other workshops?
No. You may attend other workshops first, but it is best if you are able to attend the first three basic workshops as early as possible.
